「余白」について

「余白」を英語でどう言ったらいいのか考えています。

本の余白なら margin of a book

空白は blank space や white space

けれど、沈黙や間があることで、存在がいっそう際立って、なにもないのに満ちている感じ

一言でピタッと、がなかなかありません。

「余白」

Emptiness as fullness.

Emptiness that is alive.

しっくりくる言葉がみつからないからこそ、その周辺をゆっくり歩きながらなんとか伝えようとする。その過程そのものに、翻訳のおもしろさがあるのかもしれません。

I’ve been wondering how to say the Japanese word “余白” in English.

In Japanese, “余白” can mean the margin of a book, or simply blank space or white space.

But the “余白” I’m thinking of is different.

A pause, a silence, a space that makes what exists stand out more vividly.

A nothingness that somehow feels full.

It’s hard to capture it all in a single word.

Precisely because we cannot always find the word that feels just right, we try to convey it somehow by slowly walking around its edges.

Perhaps the true pleasure of translation lies in that very process. (K)
