One Step at a Time

生徒さんが、自分で作ったzineを送ってきてくれました。

あたたかくて、ていねいに作られたことが伝わってくる一冊です。

その中に、私が以前レッスンで伝えた（らしい）言葉がありました。

One step at a time.　（一歩ずつ。）

少しせわしない日々を過ごしていたこともあって、この言葉が何度も頭の中でぐるぐる。

そんなとき、別の生徒さんから聞かれました。

What drew you to teaching English?　（どうして英語を教えるようになったんですか？）

口をついて出たのは、

I can relate to my students. （生徒さんたちの気持ちが、よくわかる。）

でした。

外国語を話すときの少しぎこちない感じ。

言いたいことはあるのに、

うまく言葉にならなかったり、

間違えたり、

言い直したり。

うまくいかないこともあるけれど、それでも、少しずつ前に進んでいく。

One step at a time.

一歩ずつ歩いたらいいんだと思うと、肩の力が抜けて、ホッとしました。

One of our students sent me a zine she made herself.

It’s a warm, beautifully crafted little book. You can feel how thoughtfully it was made. And in it, I found something I had apparently said in one of our lessons:

One step at a time.

Maybe because life had been feeling a little hectic, those words kept circling around in my mind.

Around that time, another student asked me,

What drew you to teaching English?

The words that came out were,

I can relate to my students.

That slightly awkward feeling when we speak a foreign language.

We know what we want to say, but sometimes we can’t quite put it into words.

We make mistakes,

rephrase things,

and try again.

Things don’t always go smoothly, but still, little by little, we move forward.

One step at a time.

Knowing I could just take things one step at a time made me feel a little lighter. (K)
